Truth on Trial: Trump’s lies are a threat to Democracy

Beyoncé said it best: America has a problem…..In today’s political chaos, misinformation has become the weapon of choice for failed leaders, none more so than Donald Trump. As we inch closer to yet another critical election, it’s obvious that Trump’s strategy of using blatant falsehoods to distract from his incompetence hasn’t evolved since 2016. But the damage it causes is growing.

Watching Trump’s recent debate performance, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of déjà vu. The same fear-mongering, the same shameless lies. Whether he’s whipping up baseless claims about ninth-month abortions or spreading absurd ideas like immigrants eating cats and dogs, his rhetoric is nothing more than a smoke screen, a desperate attempt to divert attention from his own failure as a leader. As a junior in high school who’s deeply invested in political activism and with aspirations to major in political science, I see firsthand how these lies poison policy-making and hurt marginalized communities. Donald Trump isn’t concerned with the well-being of Americans: He’s only concerned with photo ops and stroking his own ego.

Misinformation: Trump’s Favorite Weapon

Let’s be clear: Trump’s entire political existence is built on misinformation. Whether it’s calling immigrants “rapists” or perpetuating conspiracy theories about election fraud, his goal is to instill fear, not provide solutions. His recent debate performance was no different…an hour of lies designed to scare voters. And it works. He’s a master at tapping into fear and prejudice, especially when it comes to immigrants. Instead of focusing on real issues like health care or the economy, Trump and his supporters peddle dangerous, unfounded stories to distract from their complete lack of competence.

Take one of the most outrageous examples: Trump ally J.D. Vance’s claim that Haitian immigrants were eating cats and dogs in Ohio. It’s a blatant, racist lie. Even after officials debunked it, Vance doubled down, refusing to admit he made it up. Why? Because fear sells, and in Trump’s world, facts are irrelevant. Vance’s actions, much like Trump’s, are not just offensive, they’re dangerous. By fueling these racist, baseless stories, they not only demonize immigrants but also prevent serious discussions on issues like healthcare, gun control, and immigration reform. This kind of fear-mongering stokes division and breeds hatred, with very real consequences for the people Trump claims to represent.

Trump’s Hypocrisy Knows No Bounds

It’s not just misinformation that defines Trump; it’s his hypocrisy. This is the man who calls himself “pro-life,” yet refuses to pass meaningful gun reform, even as children are gunned down in schools. He brags about protecting “family values,” but his policies stripped funding for food assistance and affordable housing, disproportionately harming the very families Republicans claim to defend. How can you call yourself pro-life when you turn your back on living, breathing children?

But that’s not all. Trump, who rails against “criminals” and “thugs” in immigrant communities, is himself a criminal as he’s charged with 34 felony counts for falsifying business records. Let’s not forget that he is also under investigation for his involvement in the January 6th insurrection. Yet, he continues to push a narrative that immigrants are the ones bringing crime into the U.S. It’s hypocritical, racist, ironic, and downright dangerous. For a man who stokes so much fear about others, he’s the one we should be most concerned about. His incitement of violence and lies have torn communities apart. The January 6th attack was just one of the many horrific consequences of his falsehoods.

Fear-Mongering and Racism: Trump’s Go-To Playbook

Trump’s go-to tactic has always been to scapegoat immigrants for America’s problems, from crime to the economy. His fear-mongering has been relentless, designed to shift attention away from his utter failure to lead. Remember, this is a man who has no actual plan…only rhetoric. Meanwhile, the real damage is happening to communities who are being targeted by his lies. Trump not only spreads racist narratives, but he also uses them to justify policies that harm millions of people.

And it’s not just the lies about immigrants. Trump has been accused of sexual assault multiple times, including bragging about it on tape. He’s a threat to public safety; just ask the women who have accused him of assault, or the Americans who watched in horror as his supporters stormed the Capitol in 2021, fueled by his lies about a “stolen election.”

The Consequences of Trump’s Fear-Mongering on the Republican Party

The damage isn’t just limited to Trump; his rhetoric has infected the entire Republican Party. Now, we hear arguments like, “If Trump was going to destroy America, he would’ve done it during his first term,” or “If Kamala Harris was going to help America, she would’ve done it already.” This simplistic, false framing distracts from the fact that Republicans have consistently blocked progress. They cry about “family values,” but where was that concern when they tried to repeal Obamacare? Where was it when they slashed funding for SNAP benefits, leaving millions of low-income families to suffer?

Their hypocrisy becomes even more glaring when it comes to gun violence. Despite claiming to protect children, they refuse to support gun reform, even as mass shootings continue to devastate schools across the country. And Trump’s callous response? He tells us to “get over it,” as if the lives lost are just political pawns, not the real tragedies they are. This is what “pro-life” looks like under Trump’s leadership: thoughts and prayers, followed by complete inaction.

Conclusion: It’s Time to Call Out Trump’s Dangerous Hypocrisy

Donald Trump’s strategy has always been clear: distract, deceive, and divide. His reliance on misinformation and fear-mongering isn’t just dishonest…..it’s dangerous. It’s not just about what he says at rallies or in debates, it’s about the real-world consequences of his words. Lives are at stake. Communities are torn apart. And we, as citizens, have a responsibility to see through the lies.

Trump’s hypocrisy is evident in every speech, every tweet, every policy he tries to push. If we don’t hold him accountable, if we allow him to continue down this path, we risk losing not just our democracy, but the very values that make America worth fighting for. It’s time to demand better because America does have a problem….it’s Donald Trump’s empty, dangerous rhetoric.
