As I grow older, the anxiousness I feel as the new year starts always seems to rise. Whether it is worrying about the next school year, or even just worrying about how to move forward, worry is a feeling most people associate with a new beginning. Worry can lead to the fear of moving forward - which ironically is exactly what a new beginning is NOT about. In the midst of a new year, what are the most impactful ways you can sustain healthier habits and look into 365 new chances to achieve? Well, although I can’t get to all of them, I’ve highlighted a few quick ones below- don’t worry, these are brief and won’t wear you out so you can spend less time reading this, and more time enacting your new goals!
Comparison. Most goals are set, but their trajectory is never ever linear. Comparing yourself with others- especially this time of year never leads to any beneficial line of reasoning. The biggest part of creating meaningful change within your life comes from the fact that you aren’t doing this to impress others or fill a line of gap, but instead you choose to do this because of your very own self. If you are creating habits because you saw someone else do it or are comparing yourself to another person that does those same habits- trust me they will never stay. This is simply because of human behavior- humans tend to put more effort into things they most want to do. The American Psychological Association even points out the self-determination theory and how the best way to make a person do something is through self-motivation. If you want to change your life, then make sure you're doing it for yourself and not others.
Consistency. Though life has its ups and downs, most everyone in this world has habits. I’ll remind you that habits can include just about everything- waking up for school, taking a shower at night, saying goodnight to your dog, or even scrolling on Tik Tok before bed. Humans have a tendency to keep doing things that are comfortable for them- and that's what we call having a habit. When setting new goals, the most beneficial way of keeping them alive is consistency- making sure that your goals are so consistent your body finds it comfortable enough to become a habit. Consistency may not look like 100% every single day- but that you're at least making some progress towards your goal. By all means- I’m not saying that you have to be perfect everyday, but instead I recommend that you try to make at least one step in the right way every single day. What is uncomfortable right now can become your comfort for tomorrow.
The last, but definitely not the least is Courage. And this one seems cliche- but it truly is the way to go. One must have the courage to change. Change brings adversity and the only way to face that adversity is through having faith in your own self. Without being let down easily- one must understand that achieving your goals will never be a linear pathway. Courage is the thing that sets apart talkers from doers, it sets apart notions and actions, it sets apart thinking and being. You need to fight your second thoughts and believe in yourself to know that even when things get hard, courage will take you forward.
Now, even after these 3 helpful suggestions, reaching your goals might seem intimidating, so to wrap it up- your goals won’t come to fruition unless you put your mind to it. Tell yourself you can, and you’ll see magic happen- change is a mindset and success is the outcome of that mindset.
